Making the DVD drive region free

WARNING: The following directions are provided without any warranties. Although the firmware update has worked for my computer I can not guarantee that it will work for your or any other computer. Updating the firmware of your DVD drive carries a high risk that may leave your DVD drive in an unusable state. You may also void the warranty from the original manufacturer. You alone have to decide if these risks are worth taking since you alone will be responsible for the results of such action.

Often DVD drives and players are locked to your specific retion. In the US this would be region 1. Unless you actually view DVDs from other regions there is no point to remove the region lock. Both, the actual hardware (the dvd drive) and the software (the dvd player) may be region locked. With the Medion PC Titanum 8000 XL both the Artec/Ultima DHI-G40 DVD drive and the Cyberlink Power-DVD software are region locked. The dvd drive can be unlocked via a firmware update that is described below and by using the RegionKiller2 software the region lock of the software is circumvented.

    Verifying the DVD drive model:

    • Label on top of drive has model number: DHI-G40
    • Firmware is 3.10

    Flashing the DVD drive firmware:

    • First make sure you verified that you have the correct DVD drive via the "Verifying the DVD drive model" steps. If your drive doesn't match these drive information then these instructions and the firmware does not work for your DVD drive and could cause damage.
    • Create a DOS boot disk with the FLDL flash tool and the 3e10 firmware.
    • Boot using the boot disk and apply the flash using the following command "FLDL #1F1 3e10.bin". Note that this command is only for the original setup where the DVD drive is setup as the slave on the first EDI connection. Check the text file which is included with FLDL for its proper usage.
